For ten days in August each year, 1000 youth athletes from across Canada gather to train with professional coaches and compete in their first national championship!
For over 70 years The Royal Canadian Legion has been sponsoring this event. Today's program evolved from the Legion’s Foster Father’s Program which was created after the Second World War. The Legion created sporting activities as a beacon of hope for youth who lost a father in the war. Over the years, this humble beginning evolved into the Canadian Olympic Training Plan and then into the National Track and Field Championships (NTFC) for this age group.
The Legion is the sole sponsor of these annual national championships. which has become the entry level for scouting potential athletes for Canada’s International, World and Olympic Track & Field Teams. The majority of Canadian Track & Field Olympic medal winners in recent years have attended these Legion Championships.
