Our Response to COVID-19

A state of emergency was declared in BC on March 17, 2020. We are all being encouraged to stay home and use social distancing if we do have to go out.  The Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry has issued an order to close all bars and clubs in BC effective immediately, March 17, 2020.

Our first concern is the health and safety of our veterans, members and their communities. We have advised our branches to follow the direction of their local Public Health Authority and our government.

All Royal Canadian Legion branches in BC must close their lounge operations until further notice.

While our branch’s are closed, we encourage our branches to monitor their email and be quick to respond to their phone messages. Veterans who may need support during this time should be able to get a hold of someone easily. We are also encouraging branches to post a sign on their door with a phone number for veteran’s or their family members in crisis can get a hold of someone.

We are asking branches and our members to please think about seniors who may be alone and unable to get out to get necessities during this crisis. Have someone check in on them and perhaps offer to get groceries or pick up prescriptions. This is a very scary time for some of the older members of our communities and we need to ensure they are cared for.

Our Command Service Officers are working throughout the crisis and are available by phone or email. Any veteran needing emergency financial assistance can contact them using the information at the end of this statement. We would like to thank the citizens of BC for their continued contributions to the Poppy Fund each year. The Poppy Fund and our Command Service Officers are here for our veterans and prepared for times like this.

All Command Office employees, including our Command Service Officers are available and currently working from home.

In this trying time, if there are Veterans anywhere in the Province that find themselves in need we encourage them to call our Command Service Officers for support at 604-575-8840 or call our toll-free number 1-888-261-2211.

Take care and stay safe!
