An Open Letter to Legion Members and the citizens of BC and Yukon:
As the new President of the Royal Canadian Legion, BC Yukon Command, I am honoured and excited to serve at the helm of this fine organization. Our Command is poised to modernize our operations, work hard to support the communities we serve, and above all stand strong for our Veterans and their families.
Our organization is always changing and adapting to the needs of our communities and Veterans. It is our mandate to manage ourselves effectively to preserve the legacy of our almost 90 year old iconic organization. We honour the intent of the Legion while ensuring we remain relevant to the people we serve. We fundraise for our charitable giving, we operate welcoming clubs and are proud of our advocacy for Veterans and their families.
Here are some interesting facts you might not know about the Legion:
- In BC and Yukon, we collect over $3,600,000 annually through our poppy campaigns in November. This money is used to give to Veterans programs, Cadets, Youth, PTSD and Trauma Counselling and many other important initiatives. We cannot use Poppy funds to operate or maintain our branches in communities. Only members joining and supporting events at our branches contribute to our operations.
- Any Canadian citizen age 18 or over can join the Legion, no military service is necessary.
- The Legion is a great place to volunteer and even acquire some transferable skills by serving on committees or just helping out.
We have many great and interesting activities in the 149 branches in BC and Yukon. It is my pleasure to invite you to join if you are not already a member. If you are a Legion member and haven't been in to your branch in a while, come on over and rekindle some great friendships.
I have a special message for our branch members and particularly executives: Thank you for your incredible volunteerism and devotion to this organization, we are stronger together and I value your contributions.
