Veterans Transition Network

vets in discussion

The memories from the ravages of war resonate in the minds of those who served in the cause of peace. Trauma-related stress injuries are real, and these injuries must be properly treated; not only for the individual but also for their loved ones.

The Veterans Transition Network is specifically designed to care for these invisible wounds.

The VTN Network provides group-based counselling and transition programs developed at the University of British Columbia by psychologists and physicians to help men and women of the Canadian Forces to overcome barriers to their transition to civilian life.

Designed specifically for barriers commonly faced when leaving the military, it helps Veterans and Service Members work through mental health issues, employment limitations and operational stress injuries. The program is delivered in a group of 6-8 Veterans in a retreat format, facilitated by two clinicians and two returning program graduates. The program runs for a total of 10 days, broken down into three workshops, delivered over 4-6 weeks.

Core components of the VTN coursework include communication skills, career counselling, as well as PTSD Education and Management. Techniques such as skills rehearsals, goal setting, and strength confrontations involve participants practicing competencies with each other to prepare for continued success after the program ends.

Participants come away with:

  • Relief from trauma symptoms;
  • Renewed sense of purpose;
  • New skills for self-regulation;
  • Stronger relationships with family and friends;
  • Motivated energy to move forward; and
  • A new skill set to successfully re-establish themselves in the community.

The Legion is one of the largest sponsors of the Veterans Transition Network. By virtue of the Legion’s fundraising efforts, the program is offered free of charge to current and former military personnel.

“…it’s not simply a healing program. It’s about transitioning soldier skills into civilian skills, regaining what you may have lost overseas and building on your abilities…”

The Veterans Transition Program is provided free of charge to current or former members of the Canadian Forces and RCMP. To inquire or for more information contact BC/Yukon Command at 604.575.8840
